![]() The main functions of CSF are to protect the brain (it acts as a shock absorber), to carry nutrients to the brain and remove waste from it. ![]() It is surrounded by a fluid called cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The brain is very delicate and is well protected by the skull. Without the brain, the body would not be able to function. It controls everything that happens in the body, including vital functions like breathing and heartbeat. The brain is a complex organ that is enclosed inside the skull. Everything we do depends on the messages (nerve impulses) that are sent from the brain, along the spinal cord and on to the rest of the body. This electrical impulse travels the length of the neuron from dendrites to cell body to axons, where the whole process repeats itself until the information reaches its destination. The brain and spine are vital to keep the body alive and functioning. The neuron then converts the message on the neurotransmitter into an electrical impulse. The neurotransmitter fits into a specific receptor site on the next neuron. The neurotransmitter crosses the synapse-the junction where two neurons meet-to the dendrites of another neuron. To send a message, an axon terminal releases a neurotransmitter. Chemicals called neurotransmitters are stored in the axon terminals. At the end of the axon are thin fibers called axon terminals. Axons, which are protected by a myelin sheath, carry messages to other neurons. The dendrites are thin fibers that receive information from other neurons and pass this information through the cell body. The cell body produces energy for the activities of the neuron. Neurons are made up of a cell body, dendrites, and axons. Neurons, or nerve cells, make up the body's communication system.
